Match report: HUNSLET 43 SKOLARS 16 at South Leeds Stadium

19th July 2022

By ANDREW JACKSON

ON a sweltering afternoon in South Leeds, Skolars couldn’t contain a Hunslet side looking to secure their place in the play-offs
They weren’t helped by an early injury to scrum-half Phil Lyon, which meant coach Joe Mbu had to re-arrange his side,
with Jacob Thomas moving to half-back. However, they took the lead when Harry Kaufman brushed off the defence. They
had another chance to attack straight away when Hunslet kicked out on the full, but Jerome Yates was held up over the
tryline. They then had to defend and conceded a goal-line drop-out. Thomas’ kick found touch and Skolars again had
possession, with Yates being stopped short this time.
The home side took the lead through Jimmy Watson after two penalties in quick succession gave them the chance to start their attack deep in Skolars’ half. Skolars had a good chance to regain the lead after a Lameck Juma break down the right, continued by Thomas but Yates missed out again, losing the ball as he was tackled on the tryline.
Hunslet took full advantage, Beharrell making a 40-20 kick to set up another attack with Harvey Hallas touching down.
Skolars then kicked out on the full when Hallas got the ball out to Jordan Syme, Hunslet were 18-4 up at the break.
Skolars responded straightway, with Yates finally crossing the tryline, Neil Thorman converting to narrow the gap to eight points. However, tries for Hunslet by Joe Summers and Jordan Doyle just after the midway point in the second half put paid to any hopes of a Skolars’ comeback.
They did score the try of the afternoon after Jarred Bassett ,made a break from deep in his own half, holding off the
defence until Abevia McDonald was able to continue to the run to the line from half-way. However, as the side tired,
Hunslet pulled away, first through a second ty for Syme, them a drop-goal for Beharrell, who finished the game with 19 points after scoring the last try with a minute remaining before kicking his seventh conversion of the afternoon.
