Match report: CORNWALL 20 SKOLARS 24 at Memorial Ground, Penryn

7th June 2022

By ANDREW JACKSON
Skolars won their second game in a row with a narrow victory over the newest side in the league, a win made harder by
having three players sin-binned during the game.
Cornwall had taken an early lead when Aaron Jones-Bishop grounded a grubber kick that went into the in-goal area.
Skolars won possession from the restart with a kick that bounced into touch, but it was a while before they turned some
good position into points with Lameck Juma managing to ground the ball despite the efforts of the defenders around him.
Soon after they chose to run a penalty rather than kick for goal and after Liam O’Callaghan was held up over the line,
Mike Greenhalgh went over from close range. They nearly went further ahead soon afterwards when Leighton Ball raced
to the corner, but couldn’t ground the ball cleanly.
Skolars finished the half with 12 men when Mike Greenhalgh was sin-binned for pushing a defender at a play-the-ball.
They held onto the 6-12 lead, but were another man short three minutes into the second half when Luciano Bejanidze
threw the ball at one of the Cornwall players after a decision went against him – an instant yellow card offence. They put in
a good defence initially holding out after conceding a goal-line drop-out, but another low kick saw Joe Purcell score on the
right. Adam Rusling’s conversion levelled the scores, but Skolars were back to 13 soon afterwards.
That didn’t last long, with Judd Greenhalgh yellow carded for a high tackle, Rusling’s penalty putting the home side ahead.
Mike Greenhalgh scored his second try of the afternoon soon after his twin brother had returned to the field. Cornwall
were chasing their first win on the season and Skolars had to keep defending. Aaron Small clung to a chip to stop a
Cornwall attack and then Skolars moved the ball to the left with Jarred Bassett coming into the line to touchdown. Phil
Lyon’s fourth conversion giving them a ten point lead with four minutes remaining.
There was still time for Purcell to add another converted try for the home side, but there wasn’t time for a restart after that
and Skolars were able to celebrate their first away win of the season on the long journey back from Penryn.
