31st January 2019

SATURDAY 18th may 2019 1PM & 4.30PM @ NEW RIVER STADIUM N22 LONDON-5

Details have been confirmed for the European Championship C decider, which will act as the next stage of qualification for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup for Greece and Norway. The nations will meet at New River Stadium, home of London Skolars on Saturday 18th May (kick off 1pm) as part of a double-header, before the Skolars’ game with Doncaster in Betfred League 1 (kick off 4.30pm).

It is the first time the nations have met, with the winners hosting Scotland (2-3 November 2019) and travelling to Russia (9-10 November 2019) in the final European Qualifying tournament for a place in England in 2021.

“We are very much looking forward to the match against Greece,” said Norway head coach Dave Hunter. “We’ll be looking at having a few camps and hopefully a game or two in preparation. RLN are very grateful to London Skolars for hosting the match on what will be a great day of rugby league for both countries.”

Opposite number Steve Georgallis added: “Everyone involved with rugby league in Greece is very excited about coming to London. Norway surprised Germany to qualify and the domestic players in both countries hold the key to who will win.”

He continued: “We will hold a selection game of Athens v Rest of Greece to determine our best home-grown players. Getting to this stage is a great result for all those who have worked tirelessly to make the sport in Greece a success.”

According to tournament director Jovan Vujosevic: “This has been the biggest European Championship C competition, involving six nations. Both Greece and Norway have been rewarded for their organic growth and spectators can look forward to a fine, open game”. He added “London Skolars have a great history of cooperation with the RLEF and are genuine supporters of rugby league development.”

Hector McNeil, London Skolars’ CEO, commented: “Skolars are very proud to be hosting such a high profile game and World Cup qualifier. With the announcement that Arsenal’s Emirates stadium will be hosting the Rugby League World Cup 2021 semi finals it’s an exciting build up to that.” He added “Haringey and Enfield have very large Greek communities and we are very excited about attracting a large contingent to this match. Hopefully we will end up creating a whole new rugby league fan base. Given Skolars play a league match as the double header those that attend the game are in for a treat.”

The Norway v Greece game will take place at 1:00 PM and will act as the curtain raiser for the Betfred League One game between London Skolars and Doncaster RLFC which is scheduled to take place at 4:30 PM. London Skolars will face Doncaster RLFC in what will be their 5th home game of the 2019 campaign. The Skolars look forward to hosting Doncaster at the New River Stadium in what looks to be a captivating affair.

London Skolars are excited about hosting the double header at their home stadium and are looking forward to the new Rugby League season as well as being part of the 2021 Rugby League World Cup journey.
