London Skolars, along with fellow Betfred League 1 sides Coventry Bears and North Wales Crusaders, have taken the decision not to participate in the inaugural 1895 Cup.

The competition’s schedule, which will see a number of games played on weeknights, means the club would potentially need to make extensive and impractical travel plans for away matches, as would opponents coming to New River Stadium midweek. This would also prove difficult for most Betfred League 1 and Championship part time players who are in full time employment.

Mark Croston, London Skolars’ Director of Rugby, commented:

“Due to scheduling matters and player welfare issues, we have decided that we cannot commit to the 1895 Cup this season. Given League 1 and the Championship consist mostly of players who currently have full time jobs, it is unrealistic to expect them to spend a full day on weekdays for away games, potentially returning in the early hours of Thursdays, thus requiring two days away from work.

“No doubt availability for selection for us and clubs travelling to London will be affected, which would have a negative impact on the integrity of the competition. The scheduling of the competition beyond 2019 will hopefully overcome the challenges of the geographical reach of League 1 and Championship.”

Alan Robinson, Coventry Bears’ Owner and CEO, added:

“The logistics are against us on this one, but we are hoping for another good Challenge Cup run like last year. Midlands fans will still be able to enjoy the special atmosphere of a floodlit game with Leeds visit to Butts Park on Friday 18th January. We will also be looking to focus all our efforts on our league position and developing our young squad in what will be another year of substantial growth for the club in the region.”
