London Skolars’ sister team Legon Skolars were crowned Accra 9s champions after beating Jamestown Pirates 18-12 in the tournament’s final in Legon, Ghana.
William Pearce-Biney scored a dramatic golden try in extra time to secure the trophy after the final was replayed following a stalemate the previous week. Pearce-Biney’s heroics capped an impressive tournament from the Skolar as he finished as the top try-scorer of the competition, which was sponsored by Sara Giwa-McNeil.
A tense 6-6 draw in the initial decider came about after fading light halted play, forcing the teams to do it all again just a few days later. Legon Skolars captain Glen Anokye said:
“It was great to finally get the win after the tense draw last week. I hope we can extend our winning form when the 13-a-side competition starts.”
Comprising of four teams, the tournament represented the perfect preparation for the upcoming Accra Rugby League Championship, which will also include Madina Panthers and the University of Ghana Bulls, who were the other teams to make up the Accra 9s.
RLFG General Manager, Sam Leach, commented: “I’m delighted with how the 9s went, but it’s important that we build on its success.”
