- 15th Annual Capital Challenge Announced
- Ellery Hanley MBE announced as guest of honour & luncheon speaker
London Skolars Rugby League club are pleased to confirm details of the 15th annual Capital Challenge match, which will take place on Friday the 18th of January 2019. The ‘Capital Challenge’ has become an iconic event in the Rugby League calendar and a firm favourite with City financial personnel and firms. This match is recognised as the official start of the London rugby league season.
This annual fixture will once again see London Skolars take on a Wigan XIII at the Honourable Artillery Company (HAC) ground. Wigan won the 2017 World Club Challenge, 2016 Grand Final and a rare double in 2013 when they won both the Super League Grand Final and Challenge Cup Final. This is Wigan’s fifth year competing at the event and should be a massive draw for this prestigious event.
Wigan are arguably the world’s largest and most recognised brand in Rugby League and are a strong contender for this season’s Super League trophy, which would add to an already impressive trophy collection. As an illustrious club, saturated in history, Wigan have undertaken the role of pioneers within Rugby League, possibly better than any other, investing resources and personnel in all corners of the country. Wigan’s owner Ian Lenagan is and has always been an enthusiastic supporter of rugby league in London and personally loves this fixture.
The match represents a unique opportunity to witness the professional sport of Rugby League being played in the heart of the City at one of London’s most spectacular and prestigious venues. For any sport loving businesses or companies looking to expand their business in the City of London there is no better networking opportunity. Businesses and fans alike can enjoy a delicious three course meal and wine served prior to kick off, in the HAC’s historic and luxurious banqueting hall.
The guest speaker and guest of honour this year is one of the greatest rugby players to play either code, Wigan RL and Great Britain legend Ellery Hanley MBE. Ellery also played for Bradford, Leeds, Western Suburbs and Balmain. He was also Head Coach of Great Britain, St Helens and Doncaster.
Spectators’ tickets can be purchased directly on the club website and Eventbrite for £20 per person. Numbers are restricted at the HAC so fans are encouraged to buy their tickets early to avoid disappointment.
