London Skolars made it seven consecutive wins on Sunday afternoon, beating local rivals Hemel Stags in a thrilling encounter at the New River Stadium.
Having already overcome the Stags in both League and Cup competitions this year, the Skolars were facing a team that had gathered momentum in recent weeks and turned a corner in their performances. The Skolars, playing the second of three consecutive home games were looking to remain undefeated in the Shield competition.
Hearts were racing at the New River Stadium as Hemel Stags crossed the whitewash for the game’s first try. The Skolars bounced back to lead 24-8 at the break after a superb try from local favourite Smokie Junor.
Early second half tries from Jacob Ogden, Dave Williams and Mike Brown helped the Skolars cement their lead, however a determined Stags side fought back to score three unanswered tries.
Mike Bishay scored the game’s final try to be the 13th try scorer on the day. The game finished 42-22.
Next for the Skolars will be the University of Gloucestershire All Golds at New River on Saturday before a trip to south Leeds the following week to play Hunslet.
