Preparations at the club are well underway for the Capital Challenge now in its 12th year, whilst the 1st team have been training hard for the visit of Wigan Warriors. The Community Department have been putting together the final details for the annual PCubed Challenge which precedes the main game. With the final school confirmed today, the draw is now ready to be made and we will publish that in due course.
This year the event looks stronger than ever before, with a number of teams all in the hunt to win the coveted title. Schools are selected from across North London, principally from Haringey and Enfield, the two boroughs which our Community Department coaches are most active in. The new Sky Try funding from the London Foundation and RFL has enabled us to deliver in far more Primary Schools this year and TAG Rugby in North London is slowly becoming a favourite sport of many children.
Once again long-standing Community Partners PCubed are sponsoring the tournament, and their staff will be present at the HAC to help with the organisation of the day and to hand out PCubed branded goodie bags to the children following the tournament.
The finalists will once again be presented with their medals on the pitch at half-time and this year’s guest of honour Wigan and England Rugby League star Sam Tomkins, fresh from his stint in the NRL with New Zealand Warriors will undoubtedly give the youngsters a great outlook on life beyond their school years.
Community Development Manager Matt Cuss commented on the tournament ‘it’s fantastic to see such a strong line-up for this year’s PCubed Challenge. The schools have all earnt their place there with some outstanding performances in TAG Rugby Competitions during 2015.’ Sky Try Funding has given us a massive boost in terms of our ability to deliver into Primary Schools in the borough. This sort of funding, coupled with support from PCubed and all our other community sponsors enables us to reach far more schools across the school year.
Cuss further commented ‘We are slowly seeing TAG Rugby standards across the borough raise every year and this is undoubtedly down to the hard-work of the teachers, Haringey Sport and their desire to support what we are trying to achieve here at London Skolars. Our Mini’s coaches will be present today and will be keeping a keen eye out for any outstanding individuals who look like they could add to our growing Mini’s section for the 2016 season.
Look out for another article closer to the tournament where we will preview the individual schools selected.
