Hunslet Hawks 60 London Skolars 4

1st April 2014

Skolars suffered a heavy defeat at South Leeds Stadium as Hunslet racked up 11 tries to 1.

Jamaine Akaidere opened the scoring after breaking the defence on halfway. Skolars fought back with Mike Bishay launching a kick deep into the Hunslet half. The home side stopped Skolars from winning a 40-20 kick, but conceded a drop-out in doing so. Skolars were able to capitalise with Judd Greenhalgh scoring his first senior try after touching down in the corner.

Skolars defended well for a large part of the first half, even keeping on-loan England International Ryan Bailey at bay. However, James Houston and Lee Mapals both slipped through the defence to score. It was 14-4 as the half-time hooter sounded, but disaster struck as Skolars tried to keep the ball alive; losing possession with Mapals gratefully adding his second try.

Three tries in seven minutes after the interval sealed the game for the Hawks on a day when Leeds City Centre was obscured by fog throughout the afternoon. Skolars rarely had the ball in the half, Sam Wellings making a strong run from deep, but the Hunslet defence snuffed out that brief attack and with Stuart Kain adding two tries before Akaidere completed a hat-trick, Skolars are still looking for their first win of the season.

Two players made their first team debut for Skolars: Kazeem Fatouri (Skolars’ appearance number 297) and Anthony Cox (298).
