Yesterday saw the first round of the Carnegie Champion Schools competition take place in North London. The year 7s took to the field for the right to represent North London in the regional playoff against the winners of the Hertfordshire competition. Enfield’s Aylward Academy took on Highgate Wood from Haringey.
Both teams were tentative in the opening stages and with this being their first game of contact Rugby League there were some early mistakes from both outfits. Once the players had settled into the game it was Aylward that took the lead. One of the stand-out players for the team from Enfield was DD Kabengere who scored a brace of tries. Highgate Wood never looked too far out of the game, with Dylan Jennings and Jake Canton-Perry both putting in strong performances in attack and defence. The final score was 36-4 to Aylward Academy, who will be working hard over the next few weeks to prepare themselves for the playoff match with the Herts champions in the coming months.
