Yesterday Skolars’ partner Further and Higher Education institutes got their respective Rugby League seasons off to a winning start!
Southgate took part in the South London Colleges 9s Competition at St. Joseph’s College, Croydon. It was the first time that many of the players had a chance to sample Rugby League; however they progressed to the final after finishing top of their group. They faced Carshalton of Croydon in the final where the game proved a close encounter with both teams scoring 3 tries a piece. Southgate scored a length of the pitch try in golden point extra time to be crowned College 9s Champions!
Middlesex University played in the London and the South 9s tournament at Hemel Hempstead. They played Northampton Gremlins in their first match and came away victors. After losing to Birmingham ‘A’ and St Marys ‘A’ in the group stages Middlesex went on to play Essex University in the Plate Semi Final. The game was a close one but Ani Mustafa was the difference making some great covering tackles and also scoring a few crucial tries. The Plate Final was played against Brunel who Middlesex historically played their first ever Rugby League Fixture against. Middlesex finished a close game victorious and look to take the momentum into their first ever BUCS league match against Oxford Brookes Bulls next Wednesday.
