The most exciting season of Championships Rugby League will open next Thursday (January 31) when Halifax and Sheffield Eagles kick-off a new-look campaign in front of the Premier Sports cameras at The Shay Stadium.

Defending champions Sheffield will face intense competition in 2013 with Barrow Raiders, Doncaster, Whitehaven and Workington Town all moving up the ranks to form an expanded 14-team Championship which will deliver 26 rounds of compelling action before the race to the Grand Final begins.

In Championship One, Hemel Stags, Oxford and University of Gloucestershire All Golds have all made the step up to the professional ranks for the first time in their respective histories and will join North Wales Crusaders, South Wales Scorpions, London Skolars, Gateshead Thunder, Rochdale Hornets and Oldham to compete in the most geographically diverse competition in Rugby League history.

With new players, new fans and new rivalries to look forward to in both division, 2013 promises to deliver an action-packed campaign with players across both competitions hoping to earn their place in the Rugby League World Cup 2013, which kicks-off in late October.

Alongside two new-look domestic leagues, the Northern Rail Cup has also undergone a transformation during the off-season and the re-structured competition kicks-off with the group stages on Easter Weekend, when eight Championship One clubs embark on the journey to Blackpool. At the conclusion of the group stage, the top two Championship One clubs will take their place in the knock-out rounds alongside all 14 Championship clubs as the competition builds in a straight knockout.

Speaking at the season’s official launch at The Mercure Hotel, Sheffield today, RFL Chief Operating Officer Ralph Rimmer said: “The Championships have delivered some of the most entertaining Rugby League at any level in recent seasons and with a series of changes across all three competitions, 2013 promises to deliver the most thrilling action to date.

“The introductions of Hemel, Gloucestershire and Oxford to the semi-professional ranks has generated a real level on anticipation and rejuvenated interest in the Championship One competition. All three sides have already underlined their determination to challenge some of the game’s most established clubs for supremacy at that level.

“The three new clubs provide the sport with a unique opportunity to take games into new areas and that is something that we are all very excited about and with two clubs set to earn promotion from Championship One this season, the competition will certainly be stiff.

“With the Championship also embracing changes and expanding to become a 14-team competition it promises to be one of the most competitive leagues we have ever seen. All 14 clubs are capable of beating one another and I feel certain that we will be treated to captivating action throughout the season.

“The Northern Rail Cup also promises to deliver an intriguing competition right from the off with the Championship One clubs battling it out to earn a spot in the knock-out stages and with Premier Sports back on board for the 2013 campaign, I look forward to watching some top-class action during the months ahead.”

The RFL is delighted to unveil Tetley’s as the new title sponsor of the world’s oldest and most prestigious Rugby League competition, the Challenge Cup.

For the 2013 and 2014 seasons, the tournament will be known as The Tetley’s Challenge Cup and various new sponsorship initiatives will be created to support this exciting new partnership.

As well as putting their name to the Tetley’s Challenge Cup, Tetley’s will also become the Official Beer of Super League for the next two seasons.

Tetley’s were title sponsors of Super League between 2000 and 2004 and RFL Chief Executive Nigel Wood is delighted to welcome back one of the country’s most recognisable brands as a major partner.

“It is an exciting new era for the sport of Rugby League,” said Wood. “Tetley’s is a dynamic national brand with a wonderful vision for Rugby League and its activation around the partnership.

“We will also be continuing our partnership with Help for Heroes and will be leveraging our Tetley’s Challenge Cup sponsorship to support the fundraising effort for the charity which is close to many people’s hearts.”

The new sponsorship was unveiled at Wembley today with the help of Martin Offiah, whose try for Wigan against Leeds in the 1994 Challenge Cup final is regarded as the greatest in the competition’s history.

Martin Offiah said: “Tetley’s new sponsorship of the Challenge Cup is great news for Rugby League.

“Every player dreams of lifting the Challenge Cup at Wembley and being part of the magical atmosphere of one of the nation’s greatest sporting occasions.

“I will always treasure the finals I played in among the greatest achievements in my career and I also know just how much it means to the all the fans, who create such a wonderful family atmosphere every year, to cheer their team on to victory at Wembley.”

RFL Commercial Director James Mercer said: “This is the latest of a number of new sponsorship deals we are announcing throughout January which I am sure all Rugby League supporters will welcome. We are excited about the sport developing a real family of partners.”

London Skolars are delighted to announce that they will host the next set of trials for their Barnet and Southgate College CORE programme on February 20th with a 10am start here at New River Stadium, Wood Green, N22 5QW.

The Centre of Rugby Education (CORE) is a three way partnership between Barnet and Southgate College, London Skolars and Saracens Rugby Union. Its main aim is to develop the best young rugby talent in the North London Area and has produced the likes of Smokie Junor (pictured) who scored recently in the Capital Challenge against the London Broncos.

The CORE programme is for students between 16 & 19 years old and combines education with rugby league and rugby union throughout the academic year. Fixtures are split between two ‘seasons’ with Rugby Union predominantly during the first term and then Rugby League following the Christmas break. Students who perform well during these periods are rewarded with the opportunity to go on and achieve county, regional and national squad recognition.

The trials will take the form of a training session, where prospective players will be given the chance to meet the Skolars and Saracens coaches and members of the current CORE squad. There will also be staff from the college on hand to discuss any academic matters and the courses available.

Prospective players can find out more information by visiting the website and following the link to Sports Performance Centre or by clicking on the link below:

As we will be running part of the training session indoors, all players are requested to turn up on the day with trainers, boots and a drink.
