RFL Welcomes Nomination Of Greg Mulholland MP For Sports Parliamentarian Of The Year

The Chairman of the All Party Rugby League Group, Greg Mulholland MP is one of the contenders for Sports Parliamentarian of The Year at the Sports and Recreation Alliance Awards 2012 being held at The House of Commons on Tuesday (December 4).

The Sport and Recreation Alliance’s Sports Parliamentarian of the Year Awards aims to highlight the good work that politicians have been doing for the sport and recreation sector during 2012, which has been a momentous year for sport.

Acting RFL Communications Director Niel Wood said: “Greg is passionate about all sports, but particularly Rugby League.

“We are fortunate to have a Member of Parliament with such a commitment to Rugby League, in terms of being an advocate of the game in the Chamber of the House of Commons, promoting the game to Parliamentary colleagues, chairing the Parliamentary Rugby League Group and playing the sport for the Political Animals and Leeds Akkies.

“We are grateful to his commitment and are delighted to see he has once again been shortlisted for the prestigious honour of Sports Parliamentarian of the Year.”

Aaron Small has left Skolars to join Hemel Stags in their first season in Co-operative Championship 1.

Coming up through the junior ranks at the club, Small made his first team debut for Skolars in March 2010 at York City Knights. That was his only appearance that season, but 2011 saw him play 14 games, all of them in the starting 13, scoring one try against Gateshead Thunder.

That progress saw him pick up the best Young Player Award at the 2011 end of season awards night. However, 2012 saw him make just one appearance, against Toulouse Olympique, but he was a key member of the Skolars ‘A’ team, winning the Harry Jepson Trophy in his final appearance.

The club is delighted to announce that our annual Friday Night Lights match, scheduled to take place on the 23rd August 2013, will once again be broadcast live by Premier Sports.

The 2013 Friday Night Lights match will be against North Wales Crusaders who, like Skolars, will be looking to make a big push for  promotion.

Commenting on the news Skolars General Manager Howard Kramer had this to say: “Our televised Friday Night Lights match against Whitehaven last season was a huge success so we are delighted to announce that the cameras will be returning when we take on Crusaders in the penultimate game of the regular season. I know, from the messages I received, that the last Friday Night Lights televised match was seen as far away as Singapore and Australia, which is great for the club”.

The 2013 fixtures have been released today and Skolars host Championship 1 newcomers Hemel Stags twice in the first month!

The season kicks off with four Northern Rail Cup fixtures in March. Skolars open up their cup campaign with a trip to Neath to face South Wales Scorpions on the 3rd March, after which two of the league’s newcomers, Hemel and Gloucestershire visit New River in successive weeks. The final Northern Rail Cup group game sees Skolars travel to take on Rochdale. The winner of Skolars group will progress to a knockout round to be played on the 19th May.

The Championship 1 season kicks off on Good Friday with a home fixture against Hemel Stags, which is sure to attract a lot of local interest.

This season the league welcomes three new teams, with Oxford RLFC joining Hemal Stags and Gloucestershire All Golds, so there will be fewer long distances for the Skolars lads to travel to play games.

Skolars opponents for the Friday Night Lights game on the 23rd August will be North Wales Crusaders and the popular fixture will, once again, be televised live by Premier Sports.

If you haven’t already purchased a season ticket for 2013 there is still time to take advantage of our great earlybird offers. To find out more please contact the club on 020 8888 8488 or visit the club’s online ticket office by clicking here
