When London Skolars face a Wigan Warriors XIII at the HAC on Friday 24th January in the Capital Challenge match the chosen supported charity for the day will be the Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals Charity.
The charity raises funds for the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals and, in doing so these specialis hospitals are able to putchase life-saving equipment, carry out vital research and help improve the lives of thousands of people affected by the UK’s two biggest killers, heart and lung disease.
Every year the Royal Brompton Hospital cares for over 2,000 children with heart or lung problems. The hospital’s Rose Ward specialises in the care of babies and children under the age of 16, who need medical treatment or surgery.
Being in hospital can be distressing for young children, which is why they’ve made a real effort in making the ward as bright, friendly and welcoming to children and their families as possible. The rooms in the unit have been specially designed with input from children and their families, creating a child-friendly, safe atmosphere where children can feel relaxed and have a good night’s sleep.
Play is also an important part of making children feel at ease, which is why they are currently fundraising to create a dedicated space that can incorporate
• A Sensory Play area
• A Role Play area
• Tables for art activities
• Display boards for children’s work and projects
• Storage space for toys and equipment
• Partitions to prevent cross-infection between particularly vulnerable children, including those with cystic fibrosis.
