Busy weekend for Skolars teams

22nd March 2011

Last weekend saw almost all tiers of the London Skolars pathway in action as a busy weekend, including the start of the London Junior League and the Skolars Premier having their first hit out against the Scottish Exiles, took place.

On Saturday, the Skolars under 14s, under 16s and under 18s were spread far and wide across London with the 14s at Hemel, 16s at Greenwich and 18s at Brentwood, taking part in the WCAM London Mini, Junior and Youth League 9s competition. The under 14s had a great day in sunny Hertfordshire playing Medway Dragons, Eastern Rhinos and Elmbridge Eagles.

Steady progress was made throughout the day with a loss, draw and eventually winning their final game, setting the boys up confidently to take on Eastern Rhinos in their first round proper game this weekend, stand out players were Tuoyo Egodo and new recruit Elliott Humphrey. The under 16s enjoyed a similar day, using the competition to work on new combinations again ahead of their opening game this weekend versus Eastern Rhinos away.

Exciting new player Jack Clover was a standout and the club are looking forward to seeing more of him play this year. The under 18s were the top performers of the weekend only getting beaten once and winning the shield competition defeating Staines in the final. Big things are expected of the under 18s in 2011 and we look forward to them, and all other age groups to having a successful year.

On Sunday, ahead of Skolars opening league home games, Skolars partner side, Middlesex University faced one of their stiffest tests of the season against Bath University. The game was a high scoring encounter and very entertaining as Bath eventually ran out 48-36 winners. We’re looking forward to some of the Middlesex players turning out for the London Skolars Premier side over the summer, who had their first hit out of the year against the Scottish Exiles.

The Exiles held the upper hand in the first half with the new look Premiers struggling to turn the possession they had into points. A more composed second half performance eventually meant they ran out 36-30 winners which stands them in good stead for their next game on Sunday 3rd April against the Royal Navy.
