Friday Night Lights

22nd August 2011

As the 2011 season draws to a close for Skolars, it’s been anything but a wind-down for the club over the last month.

The start of the month saw the third annual Pcubed City Touch tournament take place at the Honorable Artillery Company ground in the City of London. Twelve teams took part with Stratton Metals defeating Goldman Sachs, with a golden point try in extra time settling the final.

Last Sunday saw the first team travel to Gateshead Thunder, where James Anthony scored two tries in the 36-16 victory. This was the club’s first away win in over two years. Head Coach Joe Mbu was pleased with the win. “The club has been through some tough away games over the last couple of years. I’m glad we’ve finally got rid of an unwelcome landmark”.

Mbu is now focused on the season’s climax. Friday 26 August see Skolars take on Keighley Cougars in Co-operative Championship 1. It’s the sixth year that Skolars have played their Friday Night Lights game ahead of the following day’s Carnegie Challenge Cup Final at Wembley.

Skolars will be looking to finish the season on a high. They’ve already beaten the Cougars at home this season. General Manager Howard Kramer “The 18-16 victory in June was a real nail biter. We always get many fans coming down to make a full weekend of rugby league in the capital and if we get a repeat of that game they are in for a treat, even if the fans of both sides may be on the edge of their seats again”.

Whilst Swinton Lions have been promoted as champions, the game is still key for Keighley as they look for home advantage in the promotion play-offs.

The game kicks-off at 6.30pm and is preceded by Skolars’ masters taking on the Political Animals. The Olympic Suite, beneath the main stand will, once again, be hosting the very popular London Skolars’ Beer Festival.

With a large crowd expected Skolars advise those planning to attend to purchase their tickets in advance for the club’s online ticket office, which can be found by visiting skolarsstag.wpengine.com
