The Championship 1 league side and the university in north London have announced an open day on Saturday 27 February 2010, with a special programme for students interested in combining their studies with continuing to play rugby league.  Middlesex is holding an open day that day on its Hendon campus and the rugby league programme will run in tandem with this.

Middlesex student and Chancellor’s scholar Nimai Parmar, who is also a London Skolars player and coach, said: “Middlesex has some of the most generous sporting scholarships around and I have benefited from one of them.  I can combine my passion for rugby league with my ambition for an excellent degree.”

The University offers a generous range of support to its most talented athletes including:
• The Chancellor’s Scholarship – worth up to £2,000 per year of study;
• The Athlete Support Programme - including a range of benefits and support such as: free kit, access to sports science support, opportunities to gain coaching qualifications and more.

Rugby League Positions - Here is a run down of the positions that you find in a Rugby League team, with a brief explanation of what they do.

Full-Back (1)
A full-back is often the most complete player on the team. The full-back is usually the last line of defence and often the first player making the break in attack. They need the safest hands in the team.
They are responsible for catching the opposition’s high and testing kicks in attack. A full-back can suddenly turn defence into attack, make important last-ditch tackles and make the extra man in attack.

Wing (2 & 5)
Speed is what the winger is all about – and you need plenty of it. But to be a truly dependable winger, you need to pick up those difficult passes in tight spaces.
So as well as the speed of a sprinter, you need hands like glue – the ball needs to stick to you every time you get it.
But don’t think you’re only responsibility is in attack. Often the winger can be the last line of defence, so you need to be able to make those important tackles when they count.

Centre (3 & 4)
The centre is always in the thick of things, whether in attack or defence. They should be comfortable creating space for wingers as well as making that last-ditch tackle. Centres can expect to do plenty of running up and down the pitch.

Stand-Off (6)
The stand-off is the brains of the team – the player who makes the important decisions in attacks. A brilliant stand-off has the kicking skills of an international footballer. Whether it be a place kick, a drop kick or just a plain old punt, the stand-off needs to make every kick count.
They also need to be as good a passer as their half-back partner, the scrum-half. They also have to make the big tackles under pressure when it counts.

Scrum-Half (7)
The scrum-half is the link between the forwards and the backs. They can expect to make plenty of passes to team-mates.
Scrum-halfs need to have the safest pair of hands on the team – as well as a brilliant rugby league brain. They are the player who makes the important passes, and need to make the right pass at the right time. The scrum-half is the player who feeds the ball into the scrum.

Prop Forward (8 & 10)
Front row forwards must enjoy bashing their way through tackles and making big tackles when they count. The props are often the two heaviest players on a team. Props often run directly into the defensive line, trying to force their way through defenders rather than between or around them. They are expected to make “the hard yards”; going forward while being gang-tackled by several opposition players. Similarly, they are relied upon to defend against such running from the opposition's forwards.
Few prop forwards now play the full game time of 80 minutes - they are regularly substituted to keep them fresh. As always, they need excellent ball handling skills and a good rugby league brain.

Hooker (9)
The hooker probably makes more contact with the ball than any other player on the field. They often are the players who act as the dummy half after a play the ball, swinging the passes out or breaking down the opposition’s defence.
As the centre of the scrum, the hooker is the player whose job it is to win the ball from the scrum-half’s feed. Then, on top of that, they are expected to make plenty of tackles when they matter.

Second Row (11 & 12)
Like the prop forwards, the second rows get stuck in at the deep end. Making tackles and breaking down the opposition’s defence are two things every second rower loves doing.
On top of that, they are also an important part of the scrum, providing the power behind the front row. As always, a good pair of hands and a good engine are required to be a quality second row.

Loose Forward (13)
The loose forward will always be found in the thick of the action. It is a job that requires plenty of running, so they need to be super fit.
Not only that, loose forwards have to have excellent handling skills and a defence as tough as iron. They will generally top the tackle count at the end of the game. And as the last man in the scrum, it is the responsibility of the loose forward to make sure the ball is available for the scrum-half.

Interchange (14, 15, 16, 17)
Most interchanges are tactical, and decided by the coach, but they can also come on for any player who has been sent to the blood bin with an injury. (The interchange cannot replace any player who has been sent to the sin-bin). If a player is injured or just not playing well enough, they can also be replaced by a substitute, called an interchange.
Each team has four interchange players to choose from and each team is allowed 12 'interchanges' per game. The come on at anytime during the game. This means if a player is tired, he can be taken off, rested, then sent back on again.

Urban Rugby

The purpose of Urban Rugby is to take the game out into the estates in the surrounding boroughs. It is a non contact derivative of the game that can be played on any surface and virtually any size pitch.

It is hoped that Urban Rugby will offer the chance for youngsters to get involved with sport who normally would not have the opportunity, initially the club will work in four estates and it is hoped that this can be expanded as the sport takes hold.

An integral part of the Urban Rugby plan is that each estate will produce an ‘Urban Rugby Leader’ in order to coordinate and rive the game forward in each estate, this will be linked to coaching qualifications and Young Leaders Awards.

The 2010 Programme will take place at the following times and dates:

Week 1 - 2nd Aug - 6th Aug 2010 - Priory Park - 10.00am - 12.00pm each day.
Week 2 - 9th Aug - 13th Aug 2010 - Lordship Recreation Ground  - 10.00am - 12.00pm each day.
Week 3 - 16th Aug - 20th Aug 2010 - White Hart Lane Community Sports Centre - 10.00am - 12.00pm each day.
Week 4 - 23rd Aug - 27th Aug 2010 - White Hart Lane Community Sports Centre - 10.00am - 12.00pm each day.

North London Junior League

The Skolars North London Junior League is a brand new competition for 2009 and beyond.

It is based upon the club’s highly extensive Community activity and aims to produce a domestic tier of competition for Junior Rugby League in the surrounding boroughs.

Initially the competition will run with four teams at Under 13s level, it is hoped that this can be expanded to six playing at both mini (under 11) and junior (13s and 15s) in the coming years.

The four clubs who will compete in the inaugural competition are:

Arnos Grove Gladiators, Edmonton Eagles, Highgate Hawks and the Wood Green Warriors.

From this competition the players for the Performance level ‘Skolars Juniors’ and Scholarship scheme will be picked to compete in the London Junior League.

Masters

All players must be over 35 and retired from competitive football.

Competitive Rugby League is hard, physical and with only 2000 registered club players aged 30 or over, it is fair to say it is a young persons sport. Until Now! Masters Rugby League started in New Zealand in 1992 and progressed to Australia, enjoying great success and is currently engaging thousands of players.

Masters Rugby League can only be played by persons aged 35 or over, is strictly a social version of the sport and the rules are slightly modified to cater for the older gentleman. There are no winners, no champions and no cup finals. It is all in the spirit of the game rather proving a point or settling a score. The most important rule is “Everyone has to buy a drink for their opposite number”.

Masters is all about Fun, Participation and Friendship

Its 13-a-side contact rugby league however some rule modifications changes include:

  • 5m rule instead of 10m
  • Different coloured shorts for different age groups and the rules, plus players awareness during the game, are adapted accordingly. Tackles are modified according to age:

- White and Black short players tend to tackle each other normally

- Red short players must be physically stopped and held. On defence, red short players must make a definite 2 handed hold on the attacker

- Gold Short Players to tackle or be tackled need to just touch i.e. no tackling

  • No more than 2 players allowed in any tackle and no fending/handoffs
  • Once progress has stopped, players are preferred to succumb
  • Rough and over vigorous play is not condoned; safety (to old bones) is paramount
  • Passive scrums happen after nearly all infringements and turnovers
  • 1 marker and dummy half/acting half back must pass
  • Kicks only allowed on the last tackle
  • 25 minutes each way with unlimited interchange
