Skolars announce Middlesex University rugby league open day

An opportunity for talented rugby league players to combine their playing skills with academic achievement has been announced by London Skolars and Middlesex University.

The Championship 1 league side and the university in north London have announced an open day on Saturday 27 February 2010, with a special programme for students interested in combining their studies with continuing to play rugby league.  Middlesex is holding an open day that day on its Hendon campus and the rugby league programme will run in tandem with this.

London Skolars are working with Middlesex University to develop a team to play in university competitions and to enable talented players to progress through the London Skolars performance pathway.  Some could even play in the club’s RLC Premiership and Co-operative Championship 1 sides.

The programme running alongside the open day will include a training session run by London Skolars and information on Middlesex scholarships available to gifted sports people.

Middlesex student and Chancellor’s scholar Nimai Parmar, who is also a London Skolars player and coach, said: “Middlesex has some of the most generous sporting scholarships around and I have benefited from one of them.  I can combine my passion for rugby league with my ambition for an excellent degree.”

The University offers a generous range of support to its most talented athletes including:
• The Chancellor’s Scholarship – worth up to £2,000 per year of study;
• The Athlete Support Programme - including a range of benefits and support such as: free kit, access to sports science support, opportunities to gain coaching qualifications and more.

To attend the University Open Day on Saturday 27 February, potential students are asked to register by completing an online registration form at www.mdx.ac.uk.

Mel Parker, Head of Sport and Recreation at Middlesex University, can also forward the itinerary for the day to anyone signed up.
