NEW RUGBY FOOTBALL LEAGUE STRUCTURE EXPLAINED AS LONDON SKOLARS AIM FOR THE PLAY-OFFS

3rd June 2019

There is a new look to the Rugby Football League (RFL) structure this season, with fewer teams competing in the third tier, as well as a new promotion and relegation format. League 1 contains just 11 clubs, while the Championship has been expanded to 14 teams. Super League remains with 12 clubs.

After playing each team home and away over the course of the season, if Skolars finish in 1st place in League One, they will be automatically promoted to the Championship. Should they finish anywhere between 2nd and 6th in the table, they will qualify for a five-team play off format to decide who will earn the second promotion place. As it has been the case previously, there is no relegation from Betfred League 1.

The full Betfred League 1 play-off structure is outlined below.

Round 1

Elimination final: GAME A: 5th vs 6th

Qualifying final: GAME B: 3rd vs 4th

Round 2

1st semi final: GAME C: Loser of QF vs Winner of EF

2nd semi final: GAME D: 2nd vs Winner of QF

Round 3

The Betfred Championship will see 14 teams play each other home and away as well as an extra game at Summer Bash. The top five teams will compete in a postseason play off with the eventual winners claiming the sole place in the Super League for the following season. The bottom two Championship sides will be relegated to League 1.
