Hype for the new campaign continues in the capital as London Skolars’ pre-season preparations roll on. A tremendous turn out at last Friday’s Capital Challenge has whetted the city’s appetite for Rugby League in 2019 and that thirst can be quenched again later this week when Skolars take on cross-city rivals London Broncos at New River Stadium (Friday 25th Jan, kickoff 7pm).
Speaking to skolarsrl.com when the fixture, dubbed the ‘London Clash’, was initially announced, Hector McNeil, London Skolars CEO, commented:
“This should be a very exciting game. Broncos being in Super League is huge for London Rugby League and this is the first time we have held this on a Friday night under lights. We are also excited to launch our new off field experience which we have put significant investment and organisation into to make Skolars games day much more of an event than just a match. We would encourage all fans of London Rugby League to attend and support the two professional teams in London.”
Jermaine Coleman, London Skolars Head Coach, added:
“The game is really good for us in terms of our preparation for the new season. The mixture of academy players and first team players really gives us a challenge. It gives us an opportunity to blow the cobwebs off after the offseason and the boys are all excited to hopefully get some bragging rights in London.”
New Skolars signings such as Iliess Macani, Liam Scott, Joseph Burchell, Clinton Hughes and Malikhi Lloyd-Jones will all be in contention to play in the match against Broncos, who could show off a number of their own offseason recruits.
Danny Ward’s side will make the cross-city trip to face Skolars ahead of their return to the Super League. They gained promotion from the Betfred Championship last season after winning the Million Pound Game against Toronto Wolfpack in Canada. London Broncos commented:
“The pre-season fixture with Skolars is one we always look forward too. It’s a great day out for our Academy boys and helps continue build the relationship between the London clubs”.
