In the second of London Skolars previews for Friday’s PCUBED Schools Challenge we take an in depth look at Canonbury Primary School from Islington, who will be entering the tournament for the first time in 2018.

Canonbury Primary School

Canonbury Primary School in Islington provide a high-quality experience for their pupils in line with the National Curriculum guidelines. They have a strong reputation in the borough for sport, and teams regularly participate in most competitions available to them through the Islington Sport Development Unit.

PE Specialist Karl Beckford, who delivers the majority of PE provision at Canonbury Primary said:

“Our strengths are netball, football and TAG Rugby, so most team sports. We provide an environment in school where we can build healthy competition for the pupils, whilst highlighting the core values of good sportsmanship and teamwork. Outside of our curriculum activity we participate in Borough events which support children in building resilience, confidence and mutual respect.

Commenting on their first visit to the HAC for the PCUBED Schools Challenge, Mr Beckford spoke of his and the pupil’s excitement at the prospect of the whole day:

‘Since the invitation came, it’s been a really busy time for us all as we prepare for the day. Picking a squad has been a real task, as there has been so many players who want to be involved.

We’ve gone with the majority of the squad that won the Islington Tournament and have rewarded them with the chance to play here at the HAC in what should be a great day out. We are particularly looking forward to playing schools from Haringey and Enfield, as apart from the London Youth Games there isn’t really a platform that allows us to compete against them on a regular basis.

I understand that the tournament has been running for a number of years now, and that some of the Haringey & Enfield schools have played at the venue many times, so they’ll probably have an edge in terms of knowing what to expect on the day, however we are really looking forward to the day, and the chance to represent Islington, and hopefully we can do our school and our Borough proud.’canonbury-logo
