U16’s March on Whilst U14’s Debutants Show Promise

27th March 2017

U16’s march on, whilst U14’s debutants show signs of real promise.

Saturday saw a triple header of Rugby League take place at New River, as our U14’s and U16’s both welcomed opposition to North London prior to the 1st team taking on the Coventry Bears in League One.

The U14’s kicked off the day of Rugby League with a fantastic contest in the sun against the Sussex Merlins, despite fielding only a bare 13, the Merlins were blessed with some real talent and the inexperienced Skolars struggled to gain a real foothold in the game. However once again for Head Coach Paul Quill there was some glimpses of what this young side is capable of. With 5 new players making their debuts this week, and a limited amount of time on the training field, the tries scored by the young Skolars were nothing short of fantastic and Quill was rightly pleased with his charges despite the scoreline going against them.

The U16’s had the pleasure of playing on the Main Stadium pitch as a curtain raiser before the First Team’s League One fixture against Coventry Bears. Looking to continue with their winning ways following on from their victory last week against Brentwood Eels, Head Coach Dion Chapman was able to field a near full strength side, with Broncos Scholarship players Adam Green and Dylan Jimni bolstering the pack.

Ably led around the field by dummy-half Tommy Fraine, the big Skolars pack run riot throughout the game, with some barnstorming runs by Will Prior. Not to be outdone by the players in the middle, outside backs Luca Bejanidze and Nicholas Harrington were also prominent, causing real problems with their pace and direct carries. Captain Fraser Piercy Farley was outstanding again crossing for a hat-trick of tries. Tommy Fraine was also deadly with the boot, converting consistently from all over the park to take the full-time score to 54-12 in favour of the Skolars.

The impressive start by the young teams obviously rubbed off on the watching 1st team, as they recorded a fantastic first League One victory against Coventry Bears. The U14’s & U16’s will have a week scheduled break now, however they won’t let up and will be working hard this week to continue to improve.

London Skolars are always on the look-out for potential talent and if anyone is interested in playing Rugby League in North London then they are urged to contact Player Recruitment Officer Dion Chapman on the contact details below to arrange attending a training session:
