Skolars Looking Forward to ‘Derby’ Day 2017

This Good Friday sees London Skolars welcome their local’ rivals Hemel Stags for the Annual clash between the two sides. This year’s contest will kick off on Friday 14th April at 4pm to ensure London RL fans can take in the London Broncos fixture v’s Toulouse and then make it across to New River to finish the day with Skolars.

Despite Hemel Stags relocating the majority of their operation to Dewsbury, there is still a local bite when these two rivals play each other, and the move north has not diminished the Skolars desire to get one over on the men from Pennine Way.

The sides have already met once this season with the Skolars edging a messy Challenge Cup encounter by 22 points to 12. After experiencing the poor conditions at Pennine Way, which restricted a fast-flowing game, the Skolars will relish the opportunity to take on the Stags on the 3G surface at New River.

Fans are urged to arrive early and join us in the ‘1995’ Clubhouse prior to the KO, where we will be showing live coverage on our HD Screens from the Superleague as Wigan take on St Helens and Castleford take on Wakefield.

In what has become a regular feature at Skolars on match-days, fans will be able to enjoy a wide selection of craft beer and real-ale from our sponsors Caveman Brewery. With hot food, live Rugby League all day, followed by post-match entertainment and a late bar option. Skolars is the only place to be on Good Friday.

For those fan’s who want to start the day in style, the Skolars will be hosting pre-match hospitality in Bickles Yard. For just £30 with a programme and match-ticket included, fans can enjoy a hot meal, drinks, and coffee in comfort, before taking their seat in the grandstand before the big Derby Clash.

Match kicks off at 4 pm. Pre-match Hospitality and events from 12pm.

Tickets are now available online priced at £12 for adults & £6 concessions. Follow the link below to be part of the day :

U16’s march on, whilst U14’s debutants show signs of real promise.

Saturday saw a triple header of Rugby League take place at New River, as our U14’s and U16’s both welcomed opposition to North London prior to the 1st team taking on the Coventry Bears in League One.

The U14’s kicked off the day of Rugby League with a fantastic contest in the sun against the Sussex Merlins, despite fielding only a bare 13, the Merlins were blessed with some real talent and the inexperienced Skolars struggled to gain a real foothold in the game. However once again for Head Coach Paul Quill there was some glimpses of what this young side is capable of. With 5 new players making their debuts this week, and a limited amount of time on the training field, the tries scored by the young Skolars were nothing short of fantastic and Quill was rightly pleased with his charges despite the scoreline going against them.

The U16’s had the pleasure of playing on the Main Stadium pitch as a curtain raiser before the First Team’s League One fixture against Coventry Bears. Looking to continue with their winning ways following on from their victory last week against Brentwood Eels, Head Coach Dion Chapman was able to field a near full strength side, with Broncos Scholarship players Adam Green and Dylan Jimni bolstering the pack.

Ably led around the field by dummy-half Tommy Fraine, the big Skolars pack run riot throughout the game, with some barnstorming runs by Will Prior. Not to be outdone by the players in the middle, outside backs Luca Bejanidze and Nicholas Harrington were also prominent, causing real problems with their pace and direct carries. Captain Fraser Piercy Farley was outstanding again crossing for a hat-trick of tries. Tommy Fraine was also deadly with the boot, converting consistently from all over the park to take the full-time score to 54-12 in favour of the Skolars.

The impressive start by the young teams obviously rubbed off on the watching 1st team, as they recorded a fantastic first League One victory against Coventry Bears. The U14’s & U16’s will have a week scheduled break now, however they won’t let up and will be working hard this week to continue to improve.

London Skolars are always on the look-out for potential talent and if anyone is interested in playing Rugby League in North London then they are urged to contact Player Recruitment Officer Dion Chapman on the contact details below to arrange attending a training session:

It was a positive start for our U14’s & U16’s as London Junior League got underway this weekend.

This Saturday saw the first fixture of the 2017 London Junior League Season. After a very active Pre-Season which has seen a number of players taking part in regular activity across the Winter months, it was a welcome sight to see the post pad’s and flags laid out on Perth Road in preparation for some Rugby League.

Our U14’s had the pleasure of hosting Invicta Panthers at home, and were under no illusions how tough the challenge would be from a notoriously strong club. There were plenty of new faces for this year’s U14’s but the beauty of such a long pre-season has meant that they have gelled together already and so were able to compete for long periods with the boys from Invicta, albeit losing their way in the final 10 minutes or so as the game finished 40 points to 22 in favour of the Panthers.

U14’s Head Coach Paul Quill was extremely pleased with his young charges and spoke highly of the way in which they approached the game, with games coming thick and fast he will be looking for another positive performance this weekend as they welcome Sussex Merlins.

Meanwhile our U16’s age group led by First Team player Dion Chapman travelled to Brentwood for an extremely tough start against the Eels. The Eels are one of the most consistent teams in the London Junior League and boasted a roster of 27 players to pick from, so the Skolars were in for a tough morning of Rugby League.

However the U16’s rose to the challenge, bolstered by London Broncos Scholarship player Dylan Jimni and with captain Fraser Piercy-Farley leading the charge they raced into a 20-0 lead at half-time. A smart and enthusiastic half, left Brentwood with far too much to do in the second 30 minutes and even though they mounted a spirited come-back, to make the final 5 minutes nervy for the Skolars boys, it was too big a mountain to climb and the boys from North London secured a fantastic 30-24 victory.

This weekend see’s the U14’s welcome Sussex Merlins to Perth Road with a 10.30am kick off scheduled, before the U16’s get the prime slot on the Stadium Pitch as they welcome 9’s Champions North Herts Crusaders with a kick off scheduled for 12pm.
