Skolars sign former Warrington Wolves academy player

London Skolars have signed 22 year old Jake Melling to join the first team squad for the 2017 campaign.

Jake had previously played rugby league in his home town of Wigan for Shevington Sharks and Wigan St Pats. He moved on to play for the Warrington Wolves academy for a further three years. Being a utility back, his preferred position is Centre but is capable of playing in any back position. Jake also benefits from his time as an England touch rugby international having played in European tournaments as well as in the World Cup in Australia in 2015.

Speaking on signing for Skolars, Jake said “I’m excited by the challenge of coming to play in London. I’ve had a tour of the facilities and am really looking forward to getting involved with pre-season training.” Club General Manager welcomed Jake to the club and said “we’re excited to have Jake at the club, he’ll also be joining the staff team as our new Corporate Sales Executive giving him a really good understanding of the club and its partners”.

London Skolars are pleased to announce that hooker Billy Driver has re-signed for the forthcoming season.

Billy hails from Dagenham, East London, he was introduced to Rugby League around the age of fifteen where he played for the Brentwood Eels. There he took to the game with relative ease, and was quickly spotted by London Bronco’s, initially appearing for the Scholarship and under 18 sides on the wing.

However, at under 20’s, under the guidance of Mick Howell, Billy was transformed into an impact hooker. Frequently appearing from the bench to take advantage of the tiring middle defences of opposing sides. He produced much of his best rugby during this period, finishing as one of the team’s best performers in his final year.

Upon leaving the London Bronco’s Billy trained with the London Skolars briefly before trying Rugby Union. He enjoyed spells with Barking and more recently Southend RFC, even making an appearance for Wasps A side. Mid way through 2015 Billy returned to the London Skolars, during his second spell in Rugby League he has established himself as an important member of the squad.

Billy has also quickly become a fan favourite during his time at the club, with his footwork and lightening acceleration causing havoc for opposing defences, often leaving people on the edge of their seats. To see him and the rest of the team in action, be sure to get your season ticket for 2017.

London Skolars are pleased to announce their annual pre-season fixture against the London Bronco’s will take place on Saturday January 28th at the New River Stadium.

This is the second scheduled fixture of the London Skolars pre-season calendar, with the first team in action the week before in the club’s showpiece event, the London Capital Challenge against newly crowned Super League Champions Wigan Warriors.

Both clubs will be preparing for the season hoping to improve on last year’s performance. The London Broncos performed strongly in the Championship, ending the regular season in second place and earning a spot in the middle eights where they performed admirably. They finally finished in sixth place, with a notable scalp against Salford the pick of several other strong performances.

London Skolars finished in the top 8’s of the Kingstone Press League 1 picking up notable wins against the likes of North Wales, Barrow, Keighley and Doncaster.

Head Coach Jermaine Coleman had this to say regarding the announcement ‘This fixture is great for me and my staff as we attempt to work out our strongest side for the opening league fixture against Toronto, it is always competitive, we were on the wrong end of the scoreline last year and we will most definitely be looking to rectify that this year.’
