Capital Challenge on course to break records

London Skolars traditional January Capital Challenge event at Honourable Artillery Company’s grounds in the City of London is well on course to break records for ticket sales and attendees at the pre-match luncheon.

On the 24th January Skolars will host a Wigan Warriors XIII at the prestigious London venue and match ticket sales have already surpassed the previous highest figure for Capital Challenge matches against London Broncos.

Commenting on ticket sales London Skolars General Manager Howard Kramer had this to say: “Whilst we were disppointed by London Broncos not being able to take part in our annual Capital Challenge match in 2014 we were delighted that Wigan agreed to step in and bring a team down to play us. Ticket sales for the match have been steady since the game was announced but in the past week we have seen a real acceleration in sales and we are already some way ahead of our record pre-sales, which were achieved last year. Match tickets, priced at £15, can still be purchased from our online ticket office at”.

In addition to the match Skolars will once again host a pre-match luncheon in the Prince Consort Room at the HAC and guests will be treated to two legendary guest speakers in Jamie Peacock MBE and Martin Offiah MBE. Sales of lunch places have also been brisk, according to Kramer: “With Wigan in town with the Challenge Cup and Super League trophies on display and with two great guest speakers I am not surprised that last year’s record attendance at the Capital Challenge is well on course to be broken. Tables and places at the luncheon have been selling steadily and we have almost surpassed last year’s numbers with more sales expected in the next two weeks. I would urge anyone thinking of attending this great event to book now”.

As London Skolars head coach Joe Mbu continues to assemble his squad for the 2014 campaign the club are delighted to announce the addition of two more quality signings.

Half-back Matt Bradley joins from Championship 1 side University of Gloucester All Golds having made 14 appearances for the them in 2013, in which he kicked an impressive 29 goals.

Bradley, who has gained representative honours for England Students Rugby League and England Colleges (Rugby Union), was initially named in the Italian training Squad for the Rugby League World Cup. He played for the Italian side in the European Shield game against Russia.

Talking about his move to London Bradley (pictured above with Joe Mbu) had this to say: “I’ve had three very enjoyable years at Gloucester and playing week in week out in Championship 1 was a great experience for me. The chance to move to London and play for Skolars was too good an opportunity to turn down and I have been very impressed with Joe Mbu’s plans for the team. I can’t wait to get started.”

Joining Bradley at Skolars is another outstanding young half back-talent, Courtney Davies, who joins from South Wales Scorpions. Davies (19) was captain of Wales under 18s in 2012. He started his Rugby League at Neath Port Talbot Steelers in their junior set-up and went on to play for the old Celtic Crusaders and then the WRL run Scorpions Academy. He made his senior debut for Scorpions in the 2012 season.

Skolars head coach Mbu is understandably delighted with the two latest additions to his squad: “Whilst we have lost a couple of key players from last year I have had the opportunity to bring in two very talented young players who already have experience playing in our league. I believe they will prove to be very valuable additions to the squad. I was impressed by their desire to not only relocate to London but to improve as players. I believe I can offer them that platform.”

London Skolars Rugby League are pleased to announce that the 2014 Capital Challenge match on January 24th, between Skolars and Wigan Warriors, will again be sponsored by NASDAQ OMX Global Indexes, a leading provider of transparent, rules-based global benchmarks for institutional investors.

The Capital Challenge will be held in the grounds of the Honourable Artillery Company in the heart of the City of London. In 2014, London Skolars will host current Super League Champions and Challenge Cup holders Wigan Warriors, in the absence of traditional opponents the London Broncos.

“We are delighted that NASDAQ is returning as a sponsor of our Capital Challenge match at the HAC in January as it promises to be an outstanding occasion for Rugby League in the South,” said Skolars General Manager Howard Kramer. “NASDAQ has shown a real appetite and enthusiasm for supporting the growth of the sport in London and we look forward to entertaining our fans with a quality match.”

NASDAQ OMX Global Indexes have been creating innovative, market-leading indexes since 1971 with indexes spanning different geographies, including the Nordic and Baltic regions. The parent company, The NASDAQ OMX Group, operates the NASDAQ stock exchange based in the United States and eight European stock exchanges.

In addition to the match, two top speakers in Jamie Peacock MBE and Martin Offiah MBE, will be in attendance at the pre-match luncheon being held in the Prince Consort Room at the Honourable Artillery Company grounds.

Along with NASDAQ, a number of other key partners and sponsors have signed on for this prestigious event. Details of these organisations will be released in the coming weeks.

As London Skolars head coach Joe Mbu continues to assemble his squad for the 2014 season the club are delighted to announce that three key players from the 2013 season have put pen to paper on new contracts for the 2014 campaign.

Long serving John Paxton, who received the coveted Coach’s player of the year award in 2013, has again committed himself to the club. Paxton had an outstanding season and was a model of consistency making a total of 25 appearances last term and helping the team by playing in a number of positions during the season. Paxton has now made 78 career appearances for the club, scoring 88 points in the process.

Also signing for the club again is Rob Thomas (pictured above). Rob made 20 appearances in 2013, scoring 28 points which included a memorable 19 minute hat-trick against Oxford at New River in May. Thomas has now made 44 appearances for Skolars scoring 44 points.

Sam Wellings, who had previously played for Championship 1 rivals South Wales Scorpions, joined the club at the end of May and made his debut in the astonishing 52-55 victory at Gateshead in June. Wellings went on to make 14 appearances for the club, cementing a starting position in Joe Mbu’s team and playing consistently well.

On announcing the re-signing of the three players head coach Joe Mbu commented: “Whilst we have lost one or two players for 2014 it was very important that we kept the nucleus of the team. In retaining John Paxton, Rob Thomas and Sam Wellings the club have secured the services of three vital players, all of whom contributed significantly last season. With Dave Williams already signed up the squad is shaping up nicely for the challenge ahead.”
